Harrisville Design's 100% wool yarn is spun at the historic woolen mill in Harrisville, New Hampshire, from a combination of Merino Cross wool from New Zealand and a softer wool from Australia. The fleece is dyed-in-the -wool for the brightest and truest colors. The bold colors are spun into vivid solid colored yarn or carded and spun together to create extraordinary heathers.Discover the Harrisville rainbow of top quality wool yarn for all your knitting and weaving projects.
Harrisville treats their weaving and knitting yarns similarly during carding and spinning. After spinning, however, Harrisville's Highland is wound on cones unwashed or is washed then reeled into skeins. The unwashed yarn contains more spinning oils and has an unfinished look and feel. It will shrink and full when washed. When planning on using the coned yarn, allow 15% for shrinkage and take-up. Conversely, the skeined yarn has been pre-washed to make is softer, loftier, and pre-shrunk. Hand knitters generally prefer using the washed skeins, but machine knitters and weavers select either the unwashed or washed yarn. Due to the variation in shrinkages, sett, and gauge, it is not advised to mix washed and unwashed yarns in the same project.
Stadium blankets, heavy shawls and warm winter wear come to mind when you think of Highland yarn. The Harrisville yarns full and felt beautifully - have fun experimenting! Harrisville's Highland style yarn is also one of the nicest yarns we sell. The colors are lively and fashionable. With this many colors, you'll be busy for years.
